Small Business = Breaking Bad?

Watching Colbert Report on the Comedy Channel, I was struck by one of the segments equating the meth business to a legal small business enterprise in America today.   A successful small business owner must live and breathe his/her business; it is 8:39 pm and I am posting to my blog after working a full day.   I will continue to work for, at least, another hour.

In Breaking Bad, the high school chemistry teacher “betters” himself by taking chances and starting a small business.  Okay, his business is illegal.  Let’s pretend, for this post, that it is as legal as a medical transcription service.  All entrepreneurs take risks and these risks must have the possibility of a big payback or it isn’t worth it.   You can’t be a meth user and run a meth business because you basically can’t do anything else and run a small business.  It consumes every hour of every day.  If you aren’t working, you are thinking about work.

If you have watched Breaking Bad, you know all of the chances that Walter White takes while juggling children, his health, and his marriage.  Sometimes I think that the meth business might be easier than dealing with RFPs for government hospitals, competition that uses false line counts, or the constant questions by independent contractors regarding taxes.  (Yes, you have to pay them.)

But if you have the entrepreneurial spirit, it won’t matter, you will take the risks.
